30 Things To Do Before I Turn 31

Okay, so I’m a month or two behind on getting this together (thanks to Hula Seventy for the idea). But that just makes it an even better challenge, right? And to keep myself accountable, I’ll post monthly updates on my progress.

But first, let’s start with the list:

1. Walk the length of 5th Avenue in Brooklyn from Flatbush Avenue to Coney Island.

2. Complete the last of the beginner’s level courses at the Deutsches Haus. (Accomplished: 12/07)

3. Attend a yoga class at my gym. (Accomplished: 9/22/07)

4. Improve my 5K pace time by 30 seconds/mile.

5. Read “A Russian Diary: A Journalist’s Final Account of Life, Corruption, and Death in Putin’s Russia“by Anna Politkovskaya, a well-known Russian journalist and human rights activist who was assassinated in October 2006 for her views and reporting. (I tried, really hard.  But I couldn’t get past the first 20 pages of this book.)

6. Finish ordering prints of all the photos I have uploaded to Snapfish.

7. Put all those photos in albums.

8. Go to the optometrist’s office and update my prescription. (Accomplished: 5/08)

9. Switch primary care providers. (Accomplished: 8/31/07)

10. Travel to a country I’ve never been to before. (Accomplished: 9/0710/07 and 3/08)

11. Back up my laptop to an external hard drive. (Accomplished: 10/31/07)

12. Make the world a little greener by taking advantage of the Park Slope Food Coop’s monthly plastic recycling program (Plastics #1, #2, #4 and #5!).

13. Make at least 1 meal a month from “100 Simple Meals Ready in Ten Minutes or Less.”

14. Have a professional massage every other month.

15. Have at least 3+ month’s worth of rent in my money market account.

16. Reread “The Satanic Verses” by Salman Rushdie.

17. See Ben Harper in concert again. (Accomplished: 9/16/07)

18. Figure out how to transfer the 1,000+ songs from my iPod to my new laptop’s empty iTunes program. (Accomplished: 8/16/07)

19. Participate in Self Portrait Challenge at least once a month. (Accomplished: 4/08, 2/08, 11/07, 11/07, 8/07, and 8/07)

20. Bring cloth bags to the grocery store and bag my own groceries at least 75% of the time. (Accomplished: All the time, thanks to EnviroSax!)

21. Start up a “professional discussion group” amongst my public health friends in order to stay current on what we’re each doing and learn from one another.

22. Make it back to the West Coast to visit my family and my hometown at least a couple of times. (Accomplished: 12/07 and 5/07)

23. Trek out to Woodside, Queens to get a taste of Sripraphai, the restaurant that everyone says has the best Thai food in NYC.

24. Visit the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at night during a full moon.

25. Participate in an Improv Everywhere mission. (Accomplished: 8/18/07)

26. Build up enough frequent flyer miles for another free ticket.

27. Clean out our out-of-control storage room. (Accomplished: 11/07)

28. Run the Liz Padilla Memorial 5K race in Prospect Park. (Accomplished: 9/17/07)

29. Finish reading Anna Karenina, which at the rate I’m going, make take several months. (Accomplished: 10/8/07)

30. Finally sign up for renter’s insurance. (Accomplished: 8/16/07)

    What a great list! Here is a tip for number 18 – free software you can download off the internet called iRip. I’m not sure it is approved but it works…

    You nephew is so cute – I just called my nephew this morning for his 8th birthday! I also remember so clearly holding him in the delivery room, amazed at how much I love this tiny person already. Now we can talk on the phone about the tries he scored at rugby and he can tell his mum (my sister) what I’m getting up to in Afghanistan. AMAZING!
