List no. 1: Things I miss about being a kid

I write everything down.  If I don’t have access to a pen and paper, or some way to record something, I freak out a little.  Maybe that’s why I’m so inspired (after an uninspiring day) by Hula Seventy‘s idea to post a list a week for 2010.  I’m not sure I can commit to that level of public list making, but I sure feel like giving it a go, especially after reviewing some of the beauties on Listography.

So to kick this thing off, let’s start at the very beginning — things I miss about being a kid:

  1. The backyard swing set and merry-go-round that our Grandpa built for us.
  2. Hearing the tune that signaled that the ice cream man was approaching, and the ensuing excitement as we scrambled around for spare change, hopped on our bikes and circled the neighborhood searching for him.
  3. My pink Huffy bicycle.
  4. My white raincoat patterned with big red hearts.  I begged my Mom for that raincoat when I was 5 or 6.  The first day I wore it to school, a meanie named Jesse made fun of it and I refused to ever wear it again.  But if I found an adult version, I know I’d wear every time it rained, which is a lot here.
  5. Our dogs, Floki and Max.
  6. Dancing around my grandparent’s living room with my brother and sister while listening to the Purple People Eater record.
  7. My Dad’s special way of mixing vanilla ice cream with Hershey’s chocolate syrup and stirring until it was almost like soft-serv.
  8. The kid-sized door my Grandpa built into the backyard fence so that we could go play with the little girl that lived in the house behind us.

Wow, that was fun!  And there’s a lot more, but I’m running out of time for today.  If you have suggestions for what kind of lists I should make, leave a comment!  Or even better, make your own lists and share!
