Auf dem Land

I spent last weekend exploring the easternmost edge of Germany on the Polish border, and was immediately enchanted with the history and the architecture of the area — with villages celebrating their 750th anniversary, homes dating back a few hundred years (the cellar of the house I stayed in dates back to 1776!), and various states of restoration, renovation and disrepair dotting the area.

There is so much you could say about the effect of East German rule and the subsequent reunification on this area (including the loss of industry and the population drain), but I’m afraid I can’t do the topic justice.  Instead, I’ll spend the next few days sharing photos with you so that you can see for yourself — both the timeless quality of the area, and those spaces that feel like they’re frozen in time.

Today’s photos share a little bit of the village I stayed in, tomorrow’s will give you a peak into the surrounding area, and the day after will be an architectural showcase of Görlitz.  (If you’re feeling impatient, you can check out the whole album here.)
