On the Move

Mauer Park, Berlin.

If you’ve been following my Twitter feed, or have been reading between the lines in my thinly veiled hints on this blog, you may have surmised that something is afoot in the No Apathy Allowed household — we’re moving to Berlin!  Mein Schatz has a cool new position, so we’re packing up our things and heading to Germany’s Hauptstadt.

Now wait a minute, you may be thinking, didn’t you just move to Bremen?  Well, yes and no.  Confused?  (I know I sometimes still am.)  Here’s a little synopsis, just in case.  After spending two years doing cool research in Hamburg, I was offered a three-year fellowship for my PhD in Bremen and decided to spend the work week there and commute back to Hamburg on the weekends.  So since September I’ve  considered Hamburg my home-home and Bremen my home-away-from-home.

In any case, starting mid-April, Berlin is going to be our new home-home.  We’re slowly saying our goodbyes to Hamburg, which has treated us well and will always be my first German home.  We’re using this opportunity to weed through our belongings — deciding on what furniture will make the trip with us, and what items we’d like to add to our new apartment.  (Once the rental agreement is signed, I’ll tell you all about it.  You should expect some interior design blog posts coming your way in the next few months!)

While I’m certainly not looking forward to my new 3-hour weekend commute, I still think moving to Berlin will be a grand adventure.  I can’t wait to get it started!

Sounds great. I have to admit, I’m a bit jealous. I’d love to move to a bigger city, but my job is here (and I like it).
