A Long Weekend in the North

You know what I’ve been doing a lot of since arriving in Oslo?  Working.  I guess it makes sense, since I actually am here for the express purpose of working.  There’s a lot I want to get done on my PhD during these two months, plus I’m working on a freelance project on the side (i.e., evenings and weekends).  But still, I’d hoped to have a little more spare time left over for exploring!

No worries, though.  I just handed over the freelance project this evening, so I can happily cross that off my list (for now).  While there’s still a ton to be done for my Doktorarbeit, it’s the long Easter weekend and mein Schatz is coming for a visit!

Technically, Norway has Thursday, Friday and Monday off as holiday — and I thought the German four-day Easter weekend was long!  Many Norwegians also take those few extra days off and make a week-long vacation out of it.  Like From There to Here and Northern Natterings mentioned on their blogs, the cities have become extra quiet this week as the Norwegians have literally head for the hills to do a little skiing.

So while the city might be a little less bustling over the holidays, I can’t wait to finally play tourist in the city!  We have a long list of museums and sites to visit, and they’re all open extra hours during the holiday weekend to accomodate those tourists making their way to the city.  Perfect!  We’ll have to plan a little more in advance to find open restaurants, but I’m looking forward to the adventure and getting to know the city better.

What are you up to this weekend?  Is there spring weather where you are?  Or is it still snowy and icy, like it is up here?
