Wouldn’t you know it? Despite the insanity of the California relay race back in October, I have signed up for another relay! This time I will be running with a team from work in the Need For Speed: Relay Against Domestic Violence on June 11th. Nine of us will run a 60-mile, point-to-point relay race from Bear Mountain State Park through Westchester County, finishing in downtown New Rochelle near the Long Island Sound in New York.
I’ve signed up for a 5.1 mile “moderate” leg — which is a decent enough distance to be worth trekking up to Westchester County for, but short enough that I’ll be able to keep my rebellious iliotibial band in check by throwing in a little extra stretching over the next couple months.
And of course folks don’t organize these relays just to give runners another way to punish themselves — it’s a fundraiser too! Initial grants from this relay will go toward the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation to establish a Margaret’s Place in Westchester Country. Created in honor of Joe’s mother Margaret, this program provides middle and high school students with a designated safe place in their school. So if you feel like donating, you can always do that here.
This will also be a good motivator to hit the pavement more often now that it’s light out after work. If you want to join me sometime, let me know!
