Six months ago, mein Schatz bought four tickets to see Radiohead play in Berlin. Even before I knew I would live in Germany, I had planned to make a special trip to see this show. Back in New York, I listened to In Rainbows everyday during my morning commute for almost two months straight. So last night and this morning, I spent a total of 14 hours in Berlin and only three of these hours involved sleeping. Somehow I managed to miss only one afternoon of class and did all my homework at the airport.
But the show was so entirely perfect (besides sitting outside in the cold and the rain) that I would do it all over again. It was at a venue called Wuhlheide, a little bit outside of the city; the same place Radiohead played the last time they came to Berlin (September 11, 2001). They played most (if not all) of their newest album and a perfect assortment of their other songs, even paying tribute to Berlin’s music scene by dedicating a tune “to all the f*cking amazing music that comes out of this place.” Add in the genius staging and lighting, and the whole thing was really nothing short of brilliant. I was left to wonder what instrument Thom Yorke can not play.
My camera batteries were dying throughout the show, but I still managed to snap some shots, which you can check out here.
Now let’s see if I can stay awake for a few more hours…
oh wow, must have been amazing! i need to download ‘in rainbows’ as i still have to hear it…
