List no. 11: The bright side of moving

Moving. On. Saturday.  And I’m stressed.  But since I’ll be in Hamburg on the weekends anyway and can bring back any forgotten item, I’m trying to stay calm.  So, in the midst of my packing chaos, I thought it would be better to think about the things that are actually fun about moving:

  1. Rediscovering all those little mementos and memories and photos while packing that never found their proper place and got shoved into drawers.
  2. The chance to purge all the unnecessary stuff you’ve been holding onto for no reason.
  3. Finding your favorite sweater that you thought you’d lost forever hiding behind the wardrobe.
  4. The challenge of redecorating a totally new space and making it feel like home.
  5. Visiting new restaurants, cafes and shops while getting to know your new neighborhood.

Okay, I’ve got to get back to packing.  What about you?  Is there anything you enjoy about the moving process?

As I’m in the midst of a shite move across the world, I’m having a hard time gaining perspective on this whole moving biz. But I think the thing that’s best is 2 on your list — I am LOVING throwing things away. A little sad, though, to see that there are fewer boxes than years in my life. One box per one year of life? Really? This is all I’ve done/am?

I agree that moving is a cathartic experience – a chance to clear out and chance to consolidate – and a chance to wonder why after all that clearing out and consolidation you still have some much stuff!!!

I just moved to a 2 bedroom flat and the spare bedroom is just full of boxes – the bed is in pieces stacked against the wall……hmm….must get the painting done so I can at least unpack the books etc.

  3. C: I think it takes more effort (and maybe even courage) to keep those boxes down to a minimum. Taking the time to consider what you have that still holds meaning for you is so much harder than just stockpiling it all. Good luck with your move!
Di: Good luck in settling in!
