Hamburger Fischmarkt

Inspired by Ian’s mini photo introduction to next weekend’s WEBMU in Hamburg, I wanted to tempt those of you attending to stay up all night after TQE‘s Queer Expedition and visit Sunday morning’s Fischmarkt at the harbor. Opening time? 5 o’clock. (Alternatively, you can sleep all night and wake up before dawn, but where’s the fun in that?)

After two years in Hamburg, I finally visited the Fischmarkt for the first time this past August.  It wasn’t exactly part of our plan for the evening, so I didn’t have my DSLR with me — but mein Schatz shot those gorgeous pics below with our point and shoot.

It’s really quite amazing to watch the sun come up over the harbor.  And in case you have an aversion to fish that early in the morning, there are plenty of other shopping (e.g., flowers, fruits, veggies) and eating opportunities (e.g., coffee, brötchen).  Plus, did I mention how entertaining it is to watch the early risers and all-night-partiers interact?  Priceless.

  1. There are some vendors at the Fischmarkt who’ve been there for decades — a Dutch fellow who sells smoked eel, for example, and another pair who sell fruit from the back of a truck set up like a stage, tossing bananas into the crowd. Hey, maybe I’ll get up early for it. :-)
