Christmas Market | No Apathy Allowed

25. Visit three new Christmas markets and blog about them.

Fulfilling number 25 on my 33 Things list has been quite the challenge this year.  Even though my knee has healed and I don’t need to wear a brace anymore, all the snow and ice is slowing me down and making me more reliant on my crutches when I’m outside than I would like.  Then add in the mega-(slightly tipsy)-crowds at the Weihnachtsmärkte and maybe you can see why I haven’t exactly been an avid visitor this year.

But never fear, I haven’t completely given up on my favorite thing about Christmas in Germany.  Below are photos from my first visit to Bremen’s Christmas market in the market square. (In reality, they are probably actually several separate markets strung together, but I couldn’t tell the difference, so I’m grouping them all together for the purposes of this post.)  I love the old Hanseatic buildings in Bremen, and it’s even more magical with all the lights and holiday cheer.

Beautiful, don’t you think?

Tonight we’re heading to the Christmas market along the Weser for the first time, which will also count towards my 33 Things goal, so I hope to have those pictures posted for you by this week.

Weihnachtsmarkt 2010 statistics:

  • Christmas market visits: 3 (1 in Bremen + 2 in Hamburg)
  • Mugs of Glühwein consumed: 4
  • Souvenir mugs collected: 0
  • Bags of Schmalzkuchen consumed: 4

  1. German Gems says:

I agree — beautiful market, beautiful red brick buildings and in general the beauty of German Christmas markets. I stopped counting visits and cups of Glühwein. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not…

  2. Riayn: I love Schmalzkuchen! Plus, it’s one of the few things to eat if you’re not so fond of Wurst. ;)
German Gems: Definitely one of my favorite things about Germany. Thanks for stopping by!
Mom: I hope so too! You would definitely love them.
