25. Visit three new Christmas markets and blog about them.

As promised, on Sunday evening we visited the Schlachte-Zauber Christmas market along the Weser river in Bremen, and it definitely did not disappoint.  In fact, despite the extremely chilly temperatures, it’s my favorite market in recent memory!  I loved the illuminated trees, the view of the river, and that there was plenty of space for strolling.  There is even a section turned into a medieval market, complete with medieval costumes for everyone working the stands.  Kind of a fun twist from your typical Weihnachtsmarkt!

Another wonderful treat was the huge variety of food and drink available  — we noshed on Schmalzkuchen (as usual), some small sweet potato cake things*, and toasted bread smathered in garlic cream and other deliciousness.  Perhaps my favorite feature were the outdoor fire heaters (see goodies picture below).  Heavenly.  Although (of course) every single German commented on what a waste of energy the heaters were, that didn’t stop any of them from spending a few minutes warming their frostbitten hands and cheeks by the glow of the fire.

Wow, the pictures are incredible and make me feel as if I was there. I really hope to make it back to Germany or Austria next year to visit Christmas markets.
