Seeing:
* the bright morning sun pouring through the bedroom windows because we don’t have proper curtains hanging up yet.
Hearing:
* the pounding of the raindrops during a brief summer storm.
Tasting:
* falafel from around the corner.
Smelling:
* the smell of life in a big city with a lot of people — which isn’t always pleasant, but does remind me of NYC, so I guess that part’s good.
Feeling:
* the burn in my legs as I get used to living on the 5th floor. Yes, we have an elevator in the building, but I kind of think it’s silly to use it unless I’m carrying something really, really heavy.

Good for you for using the stairs. Your body will thank you later in life.
Hi! I just discovered your blog while searching for NYers in Berlin. My boyfriend, our son (20 mo) and I moved to Berlin from NY (Brooklyn) last October. I’m german, he’s caribbean and our son’s a true New Yorker with german and caribbean mixed all throughout. We (especially I, believe it or not) are finding it quite difficult to settle in with the german ways (I was in NY for 8 years) so I am excited to read a little bit about your musings and experiences etc. Maybe that will help me see things in a different light!
@German Germs: That’s what I tell myself every single time!
@Repatriated Expat: Wow, what an adventure you’re living! I can absolutely understand, especially after 8 years in NYC, how difficult it must be to settle back into Germany. I’m wishing you lots of luck in this transition, and am looking forward to hearing your comments and thoughts here.
