Easter equals a four-day weekend around these parts. So while I worked from home on Friday, we traveled to mein Schatz‘s hometown to celebrate the rest of the weekend. Eggs were dyed and stories were told of the days before the American Easter Bunny made his way to Germany — when children looked forward to Easter egg hunts and were treated to hardboiled eggs all week long.
We brunched on Sunday with family in the countryside (or auf dem Land, which I think sounds lovelier for some reason), and took a walk to enjoy the fresh air.
Although the weather wasn’t as warm as everyone wished it would be, the sun was shining and the skies were blue.
In our down time, we sorted through the old stamp collection that was mein Schatz‘s childhood treasure inherited from his grandmother. Each stamp — dating back to after World War I, through the Third Reich, and including the division of Germany into two nations — told the story of the country’s history. I was particularly enamored with the stamps from the former East Germany, each one full of symbolism and propaganda and theater. Who knew stamps could be so much fun?
All in all, a relaxing weekend. So much so that it was hard to get back to the grind today. My system was a bit shocked by the countless cups of coffee, slices of cake, and hardboiled eggs I ingested over the previous days and wasn’t quite ready for the alarm to go off this morning. But so it goes.
How did you spend your weekend? Do you have adventures to share? Any stamp enthusiasts out there? Do tell!
The pictures look beautiful!! And I do love that the Germans have a 4 day weekend at Easter (since that gives us a little more time on our deadlines!) What an amazing stamp collection. I don’t have one per se but whenever I send out postcards on my travels I try to keep one for myself with the idea I’d have a collection (unfortunately I haven’t ever put them all in one place so I find them in random places).
