Our Balcony Garden

As just about anyone in Northern Europe could tell you, spring has taken her own sweet time in arriving this year.  So we delayed a bit in planting our little balcony garden, but on the first day of June, we decided it was time — sun or no sun!  We made the trip to our local Baumarkt and picked out some flowers for the season.

We chose a few of our mainstays that we’ve had success with over the last two years (check out our balcony in 2011 and 2012), like geraniums and lavender.  But we also decided to experiment a bit with halimium, gallardia (Kokardenblume in German), and a northern white cedar bush (to block the neighbors’ view).

Our garden is really mein Schatz‘s baby, so he did the planting and I just advised on the color arrangements!  There’s still some work to be done with cleaning up all the grime that’s gathered during the long winter, but now I’m feeling motivated to spruce things up.  Some of our plants don’t have any flowers yet, but I’ll make sure to take photos on a sunny day after everything has bloomed and things are in tip-top shape!

Are you planting a garden this year?  What are your favorite flowers?

  1. Looks pretty! Can’t wait to see them in full bloom! I’m lazy and we always just buy ours at the little flower market across the street. Haven’t tried growing any from seeds.

We chose some primroses that have since died. I think I may swap those out with another variety. Our daffodils are dead now, too. The flowers that totally win this year’s garden boxes at our place are the Forget-Me-Nots in a mixture of blue, pink and white. They’re holding up well!

Our herb boxes are doing well, too.

    • Forget-me-nots are a good idea! Someday we should also try growing some herbs or veggies too. Actually, I’m tempted to try growing strawberries! I have no idea how difficult that may be, but I think I would love it. :)
