Color//Colour Red

My red. Via Instagram.

I don’t know about you, but where I live, the sun hasn’t shone for at least a week.  The skies are filled with gray clouds, heavy with snow.  It’s northern Germany in the winter, so it’s no surprise, really.   But that makes me love Hula Seventy (in Portland) and Xanthe Berkeley‘s  (in London) solution even more — create our own weeks of color throughout the winter and then share them with each other:

RED: week one, Monday 20th January
YELLOW: week two, Monday 27th January
PINK: week three, Monday 3rd February
GREEN: week four, Monday 10th February
PURPLE: week five, Monday 17th February
ORANGE: week six, Monday 24th February

BLUE: week seven, Monday 3rd March

They will be sharing their color//colour in a tumblr and I’ll be sharing mine throughout the week on Instagram, as well as here at the end of the week.  Join in if you’d like — there’s no where to sign up, just share!

P.S. There’s definitely some hashtag action going on too. For red there’s #colorcolourRED or for all colors, just #colorcolourlovers.

Running | Looking Ahead to 2014

Ok, technically we’re already three weeks into 2014, but you catch my drift — I have some running goals for this year and  I want to share them with you!

Actually, I’ve already kicked off January with a 10K race (finished in 59:35) at the beginning of the month in Bremen’s Bürgerpark — as a part of the city’s Winter Running Series, followed by a 15K in February and a 20K in March.  So far having these races on my schedule has been the perfect motivation to keep me running through the dark, winter mornings and evenings.

I don’t have a long history of 15K and 20K races weighing me down either — my last 15K race was exactly 10 years ago and I’ve never raced a 20K before — so although I’ll be using my experience with half marathons to guide me, I get to conquer some new running territory!  My goal is to run both remaining races with a strong pace, hopefully faster than my best overall half marathon pace (10:13).

Training for a progressively longer race each month has been awesome so far.  Instead of having one long 12-week training cycle where it’s easy to lose motivation and get bored, I have three shorter ones and then the immediate gratification of seeing whether the build up has paid off each month.  Up until now, we’ve lucked out and have had such a mild winter (thanks, Polar Vortex!) that I just pulled out my running gloves for the first time last week.

If everything goes well and I feel strong after all three races, I’m thinking about signing up for an April half marathon, just to keep the momentum going.  At the moment, the Cuxhaven half marathon is on my radar since it’s only a quick train ride away from Bremen and the timing is right.  After that, my running goals are wide open, so let’s see where these next few months take me!

Are you in the midst of training for a race?  What are your fitness goals for the new year?

Bremen | Sie. Selbst. Nackt.

I can’t believe it’s taken me more than three years of living in Bremen to finally visit the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum.  Modersohn-Becker is one of the most important painters of early expressionism and spent much of her life in Bremen — in fact I walk by her family’s house every day! The museum  on Böttcherstraße also happens to be the very first to have ever been dedicated to the work of a female painter.

The catalyst for finally dropping by was a special exhibition called: Sie. Selbst. Nackt. (She. Herself. Naked.)  It features female artists in their own artistic expression of themselves nude — radical, courageous, introspective.  And the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum is the perfect location to host such an exhibition because she was indeed the first female artist to paint herself nude.

Modersohn-Becker’s Self-Portrait on 6th Wedding Anniversary (1906) was revolutionary for its time — transforming female nudes in paintings from passive subjects to active creators of the representations of their bodies.

The exhibition features an eclectic mix of classical and contemporary artists — painters, photographers, and performance artists — from all over the world.  Not an overly large collection, I found it quite easy to become absorbed by each piece without having to rush on to the next.  And the display information throughout the museum (in German only) did a great job of explaining the social and cultural context of the self-portraits.  It was one of the best Saturday afternoons I’ve spent in a long time.

Sie. Selbst. Nackt. is running for just a couple more weeks until February 2nd, 2014 and is located at Böttcherstraße 6–10 in the center of Bremen.  Tickets cost 10€ normally, or 6€ with a student discount.  Plus, there are still a lot of interesting talks, tours, and events associated with the exhibition, so it’s worth checking out!

Some of my recent pins in Pinterest.

This past week has been all about writing my dissertation with focused determination, training in the dark winter evenings for a 15K at the beginning of February, and binge watching Season 5 of Breaking Bad (I still have 6 episodes to go, so no spoilers please!). I’m in a rather intense writing phase at the moment and once I’m home in the evening, it’s hard for me to deal with anything that requires logical reasoning or creative output. (Hence, the lack of blogging.)

A little travel, a little food, and little interior decorating.

But Pinterest has been the perfect creative outlet for this kind of state of mind! And if you already follow me on Pinterest, you know I’ve been pinning up a storm these last few days. I can curate pretty and inspirational things online without having to actually create the pretty and inspirational content — and that’s just perfect for the moment.

Tattoos, food, and travel — everything that’s important to life.

Plus, I love gathering ideas for travel, cooking, tattooing and other adventures — so I know exactly where to look for (p)inspiration once I’m in the mood for adventure and creativity.

Do you enjoy pinning too?  What do you use it for the most?  Or are you still not quite sure what it’s all about?

P.S. I updated my blog theme a bit this weekend (including a display of my most recent pins on the right sidebar) — so if you read my posts in a reader,  I would love it if you would click on over to check it out and let me know what you think!
