30 Things: November-December

Oh my, a couple of months have slipped by without my even noticing! It is just as well — I’ve only accomplished a couple of things on my 30 Things list lately…

2. Complete the last of the beginner’s level courses at the Deutsches Haus.

All done, as of December. Now I’m on to Level B 1.3 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, with the hope of passing the Zertifikat Deutsch in the early summer.

20. Bring cloth bags to the grocery store and bag my own groceries at least 75% of the time.

I have not been doing so well on this, but have increased over the past month. I think this is partly due to grocery shopping on my way home from work, since I don’t make a habit of carrying canvas bags with me (and likely will not start). What I do need to do is take the extra couple of minutes to swing by the apartment to pick up the canvas bags before heading to the store.

22. Make it back to the West Coast to visit my family and my hometown at least a couple of times.

I was there for Christmas!

27. Clean out our out-of-control storage room.

It looks surprisingly organized now!

Okay, so I’ve actually been able to accomplish more than I thought. But now here is what I have left to do by June. Looks like I’ll need to be a little more focused for awhile:

1. Walk the length of 5th Avenue in Brooklyn from Flatbush Avenue to Coney Island.

4. Improve my 5K pace time by 30 seconds/mile.

5. Read “A Russian Diary: A Journalist’s Final Account of Life, Corruption, and Death in Putin’s Russia“by Anna Politkovskaya, a well-known Russian journalist and human rights activist who was assassinated in October 2006 for her views and reporting.

6. Finish ordering prints of all the photos I have uploaded to Snapfish.

7. Put all those photos in albums.

8. Go to the optometrist’s office and update my prescription.

13. Make at least 1 meal a month from “100 Simple Meals Ready in Ten Minutes or Less.”

14. Have a professional massage every other month.

15. Have at least 3+ month’s worth of rent in my money market account.

16. Reread “The Satanic Verses” by Salman Rushdie.

21. Start up a “professional discussion group” amongst my public health friends in order to stay current on what we’re each doing and learn from one another.

23. Trek out to Woodside, Queens to get a taste of Sripraphai, the restaurant that everyone says has the best Thai food in NYC.

24. Visit the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at night during a full moon.

26. Build up enough frequent flyer miles for another free ticket.

About the bags…I used to keep a wadded up plastic bag in my backpack in case I stopped at a store and picked up more than would fit in my backpack. For Christmas this year, my brother and sister-in-law got us these fabulous reusable bags that fold up to the size of a film cannister (well, maybe 2 film cannisters, but also softer!). They open bigger than a plastic bag but are extremely lightweight and I hardly notice them in the bottom of my bag. They come in really handy and look nice too! http://www.envirosax.com
