Word of the Day: Anstarren

To improve my sorely limited vocabulary, each morning I will choose one new word to integrate somewhere into my spoken and written German — either in class, in my homework, as a blog post, speaking with mein Schatz — it doesn’t matter, as long as I use it.  By using the word once or twice, I hope to change my passive vocab into active vocab! So welcome to today’s Word of the Day…

anstarren: (verb) to gape at, to stare at.  Example:Warum starrst du mich an? (Why do you stare at me?)

P.S. If you happen to speak German, I always welcome corrections!

I’ve just begun teaching myself German (looking for a good school in my area but may try Rosetta Stone, too.) and one of the most important things I’ve learned so far is: the verb always comes second as far as the order of words in a sentence. This is still a little tricky for me as I am still at that point where I translate from English when forming a sentence in German or backtranslate to English when reading German. Figuring out the gender of nouns is still very tricky for me as well. I’m a very impatient language learner :) Do you have any tips or tricks with learning German?
