We moved to Berlin over two years ago, and the balcony continues to be our favorite place in the apartment. We’re on the 4th floor (or 5th floor, American), so our balcony opens up to the sky with a clear view of the rooftops of Friedrichshain. Even in the middle of all the bustle, it’s a relaxing space to soak up the sun (when it appears) and enjoy our meals (we hardly eat inside at all during the summer months).
The little balcony garden that mein Schatz tends to is also a great source of enjoyment. Since being planted in June, most of plants and flowers have really thrived! Here’s a look at some of my favorites…
This year we also have a lot of bumblebees (or Hummel, in German) stopping by our balcony for a visit, which is a change from previous years. We obviously picked the sweetest flowers this time around!
Do you think it’s possible that the same bumblebees keep returning again and again? Or do we have a steady stream of new visitors? Mein Schatz swears up and down that he can recognize some of them!

How beautiful! I have pretty much the furthest thing from a green thumb – I could probably kill a cactus! Since a balcony is a must on our wish list for our new apartment, I may have to enlist some of your help to make ours as lovely and colorful as yours. I’ll trade you dinner for it! ;)
D has the green thumb in our household (although it’s been mostly trial-by-fire), so I’ll have him share his tips with you. :)
Wow, your boyfriend truly has a green thumb! Your balcony looks so happy! Very curious how it will look in a few months… will he decorate it accordingly?
Thanks for the comment, Judith! He usually tries to keep the flowers thriving as long as the Berlin seasons will let him, and then turns his attentions to our perennial plants. Maybe I should do a post in early winter about our indoor plants? That’s also an important time of year to have some green in your life!
Great job, D! The balcony looks to be a perfect oasis.
Thanks, Traci, it really is!
