Görlitz

The last post in my series of photos from my trip to eastern Germany last weekend is dedicated to Görlitz, which charmed the socks off of me.  The city is filled with gorgeous architecture (that wasn’t destroyed in World War II) and while I wandered around on Friday afternoon, the streets of the Old Town were mostly empty and had a very haunting feeling.  Part of that feeling came from the paradox of seeing fabulously restored buildings standing right next to abandoned, crumbling shells of wood and concrete — and in honoring the beauty in both.  The industry in this area is gone and so are most of the jobs, but there is so much potential just waiting to be realized, that it makes my heart want to burst.

Hopefully some of that comes through in the photos below.  You see all the photos from my trip here.

P.S. Did you know that Michael Ballack (a high profile German footballer) was born in Görlitz?  Or that part of Inglourious Basterds was filmed here?

Hmm…what an interesting looking place. I would love to take a week or so to do a tour around eastern Germany. So far I have only made it to Dresden, but I really liked it there. Add it to my long with list I guess!

  2. Jen & Michelle: It’s definitely worth a visit! If you arrive by train, don’t be put off by the neighborhood immediately surrounding the Hbf — delve into the Altstadt and you won’t be disappointed!
