Random Sunday

  • Thanks to Maven, I’ve been turned onto this great little food blog called Everybody Likes Sandwiches run by a “30-something, food-obsessed designer living in Vancouver, BC.” It’s fun, simple, and easy to read. In fact, I may actually make one of the recipes some day.
  • I am fascinated by the premise of an article that was in Scientific American over the summer: An Earth Without People. Scientific American interviewed Alan Weisman, author of The World Without Us, about what would happen if people suddenly vanished from the earth and how all of our man-made structures would begin to fall apart. You can watch an animated video here showing the decay of New York City — the subway floods within days, “streets cave in after two years, buildings start to crumble in four, fires in five years, bridges collapse in 300 years…” It is an interesting way to think about human impact on the environment, and how the earth would eventually reclaim its due if there were no humans to maintain their systems.
  • When I was checking on Zandria’s blog, I found out about a website called Walk Score where you can calculate (based on your address) the walkability of where you live by locating nearby stores, restaurants, schools, parks, etc. Your score can range from 0-100, and the “walkability of an address depends on how far you are comfortable walking—after all, everything is within walking distance if you have the time.” So how did my neighborhood rate? 98/100! According to the Walk Score website, anywhere from 90-100 means that “most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car.” Okay, so my score is not a huge surprise, but I think the website is a great way for people to make an informed choice about their car use when they move to new neighborhoods. (P.S. Walk Score is currently only available for US, Canada and UK addresses, but their website says they are working on adding more countries in the future.)

If you’re ever in the DC area, I hope you’ll let me know so you can check out MY area. :)
