List no. 7: Memorable concerts

I love music, particularly live music, and have been lucky to see more than my fair share of concerts in my lifetime. But instead of trying to list all the performances I’ve ever seen — which would probably be nearly impossible, not to mention a little boring — how about I share a few concerts that have a special memory attached?

  1. Janet Jackson, Rhythm Nation tour (circa 1989). I was 12 years old and it was my first concert ever. I’ll leave it at that.
  2. The Supersuckers (circa 2000). Yes, I’ll admit it. I’m a Pearl Jam groupie and only went to this particular concert at the Showbox in Seattle because I found out that Eddie Vedder was their top-secret special guest. And boy, was it worth it. I was five feet away from the stage and I was totally swooning.
  3. Thievery Corporation (circa 2005). I don’t remember the exact venue, but it was somewhere in NYC’s Meat Packing District, and the performance was crazy cool.
  4. Sleater-Kinney (circa 2002). During a concert at the Knitting Factory, I believe (Floribunda, do you remember?), the band insisted that all shorties should come closer to the stage so we could see better. Short girl power!
  5. The Evens (circa 2007). We saw them at an unremarkable NYU venue. In addition to the music, the fabulous part was that the band sat one table over from us at dinner (Quantum Leap in the W. Village) before the show. Cool by proximity, we were.
  6. Quasi (circa 2003). Again, the Knitting Factory in New York (I think). Again, Janet Weiss on drums. Need I say more?
  7. Radiohead (2008). Having never been able to score tickets to any of their shows in New York, having an unobstructed view of their performance at Wuhlheide in Berlin was simply amazing. (Photos and more here).
  8. Sonic Youth (2007). They played their Daydream Nation album in its entirety at Brooklyn’s McCarren Park Pool, an immense empty swimming pool in Greenpoint, complete with chipped and peeling turquoise paint. Cool, huh? (Check out my photos here).
  9. Ben Harper (2006). It’s no secret I’m a big admirer of his, and I’ve seen Ben Harper in concert many many times. But my favorite, by far, was a last minute show at the Supper Club, a relatively small venue in Manhattan. The venue was super intimate, we were close to the stage, and really felt the electricity of the performance. Definitely goes down as my top concert experience of all time. (You can read more of my gushing here).

We also have tickets to see Pearl Jam in Berlin this summer (with Ben Harper recently announced as the opener), and I’m sure I’ll be able to add that show to this list. (Check back in June for plenty of gushing and swooning).

This Time Last Year: March 2009

Okay, time to reflect a little bit on what was going on this time last year. As usual, click on the links to read the full posts.

Week Four: So, four weeks down, eight to go.  I am glad that the days are getting longer and it is not so stressful to squeeze in an evening run right after work.  Today’s long run, though, threatened to be thwarted by the weather…

Achtung Baby: Plenty of German words have made their way into the English language — kindergarten, gesundheit, zeitgeist, kitsch, kaput, poltergeist, angst — just to name a few

Tender, Juicy Obama Fingers Hit the Shelves: I stole the title of my post right from the Spiegel Online article explaining the latest frozen snack available here in Deutschland…

Week Five: I am extremely sleepy after an 8-mile run and a big pasta lunch.  Even so, I am here to say that I am pleased with Hamburg as a running city…

Dear Me: Although it’s Wednesday, the challenge for this week’s Sunday Scribbling is so perfectly timed, that I could not resist contributing (even a few days late).  My almost 32 year old self decided to write letters to who I was half a lifetime ago, and half a lifetime in the future…

I Come From…: Isn’t it funny how where you are can change how you answer where you come from?  How much more complicated this question is than it actually seems?…

While I’m Out: Today begins a whirlwind tour of Germany — 13 cities in 14 days, no less.  Some will be quick stops and others will be extended stays.   Some are quite famous (Brussels*, Munich, Weimar) and others I have never heard of (Leonberg,Rockenhausen)…

March 2009 also featured a few guest posts:

Favorite Links: Floribunda/Suzanne here.  Mandi has asked me to guest blog a post or two while she’s away, and I was thrilled to be asked!  With one of my favorite blogs quiet, I thought it might be interesting to post a few links to the sites I love…

Happy Spot: Hi everyone!  I’m Emily and you can usually find my scribblings here. When Mandi asked me to guest post I was really excited…

Seattle –> Frankfurt –> Hamburg

I lost all of Sunday afternoon and night on an airplane — meaning that I skipped over the Oscar’s entirely (but am psyched to hear about about Kathryn Bigelow’s win). Now that I’ve showered, unpacked, picked up some groceries and trudged through the snow (again), let’s see how long blogging can keep me awake.

Well, it’s pretty evident that I love my hometown. My trips always fly by, and really, how can they not? Especially when I’m:

  • Playing with my 4-year-old nephew who, since the last time I saw him, has transformed from a toddler into an imaginative little boy (who, while blowing out his birthday candles, wished for the ability to shoot fireballs).
  • Holding my brand new baby nephew, who is as chill as his brother is energetic.
  • Interviewing my parents about their life stories, as part of a book project that my siblings and I are putting together.
  • Taking advantage of the unseasonally mild weather in the Northwest and jumpstarting my half-marathon training.

I would love to write more, but I’m afraid my brain is turning to mush. But, below are a few photos…

P.S. I didn’t end up blogging so much while I was away, but definitely did some tweeting. Check it out, if you want the behind the scenes scoop.
